Tuesday night, swim team was a disaster. They were cranky from the shots and overtired from our weekend trip. We left early with two crying boys and needed something to turn the night around. Having read Erin's recent post on her son's fascination with Star Wars, I was inspired to see if the boys would like Star Wars.
Then came one of the nerdiest conversations of my relationship with Jon - which Star Wars movie to show them first? We don't own 1-3 for obvious reasons. Star Wars has a pretty scary opening, but starting with Empire means having to explain a lot of characters. And you certainly can't start with the Rancor (scary!) and Ewoks (although the boys would enjoy, we would not).
(Did you know I was in choir in middle school and we sang the Ewok song from the end of the Return of the Jedi?! So not only am I a HORRIBLE singer, I can sing the entire Ewok song. Oh snap!)
We chose Empire for the fight scene on Hoth, because we thought the boys would love seeing the At At fall down after it is wrapped with the tow cable.
See.... NERDS!
But the nerds were correct. The boys LOVED it.
Alex loved it so much he woke up the next morning talking about the At At falling down. And explaining to us that Darth Vader is a bad guy when he has his helmet on but underneath there is a good guy (we didn't tell him this!). When he got home from school, he continued to tell me about it all in detail again.
So we watched the Hoth fight scene again and he cheered and shouted at the tv every time an At At got destroyed.
Now this is an obsession I can get behind. As long as it doesn't go too far.

LOL. Check out my ETA on today's post (the last bullet point). William has seen all 3 (episodes IV, V, and VI) and we like Empire Strikes Back best, too. Of course, those moves take us about 45 minutes to watch because we fast-forward through 3/4ths of them. That's okay! At least I finally understand the Star Wars saga. (Sort of.) And btw--didn't read the post because I'm not a nerd. :-)
We did 'A New Hope' last week as our first because it had a recognizable princess. The intro scene didn't really bother them. Lily liked it, but Madeleine could have taken it or left it. Excited to try Empire.
Did they watch the whole movie? There are a number of scary scenes in all 3 Star Wars flicks (ignoring the prequels). I've been debating on when to introduce Ben to this goodness...

I love this! Our boys have an obsession with Star Wars as well. My sister is actually painting our boys room with Star Wars planets and things on their walls!
First thing: The Flyers are the good guys. (Jon, I'm sticking my tongue out at you right now.)
Second thing: I'm very torn about this whole starting with Empire thing. While I agree with the thinking behind the AT-AT scene, the purest in me thinks it's just wrong to introduce them out of the original sequence.
Third thing: Could everyone just get over the Ewok bashing? I know it was supposed to be Wookies and all, and that Ewoks are too cute for Star Wars, blah, blah, blah. You know what's more annoying than watching teddy bears in a Star Wars movie? Hearing people complain about it for the last 28 freaking years! Write a letter to Lucas and then just let it go.
Fourth Thing: I prefer geek to nerd.
Have to laugh at Joanna defending the Ewoks. Growing up with a Star Wars fanatic brother, Return of the Jedi was my favorite because of the cute little teddy bears.
So what are the obvious reasons that I obviously don't get about not having episodes 1-3?
Joe and I are both movie buffs (have you heard how we started dating while working at a video store?) so our kids have seen all 6 Star Wars movies and both handle the scary pretty well. Of course they have also seen all 6 Harry Potters too and Jadyn's current favorite movie is Avatar - although she calls it the blue man movie.
First things first: Joanna is totally wrong, the Flyers are big-time evil guys and the Blackhawks are most definitely the good guys.
We haven't been able to watch any of the Star Wars movies with Nina yet - she's very sensitive to the music in movies. We still have to fast forward through 75% of The Incredibles.
I can't wait to watch E.T. with her in a few years - but only if I can find a copy without the digital editing.
Hysterical! I showed ours the movies about a year ago at age 2.5, in the old school order (IV, V, and VI). When it came time to watch I, the boys quickly lost interest and I quote Logan "I want to watch the other ones, I don't like this one." I swear we have never had that conversation in front of them. But even kids get it.

All 6 movies were on Spike this past weekend in order. We TiVo'd. It's all Wy's watched ever since. And ESB is totally his fave. He likes to watch Yoda training Luke in the swamp. And flips when Han gets frozen!
You should hear the kid say "Jedi Master"...it's my favorite thing EVAH right now!
PS - My sister and BIL have season tix to the Blackhawks. We just got a box of tees and rally towels in the mail. Along with pictures of the city.
Every fountain is spewing RED, banners and posters everywhere. My favorite is the skyscraper windows lit up at night to spell LET'S GO HAWKS! Here's hoping they get it done!

I have never watched a Star Wars movie in my life...never even thought of Eli enjoying it, but I'm sure he would....maybe I should look in to this.
Never watched Star Wars for longer than 5 minutes. Hubby on the other hand will know every character. Still, I consider myself a geek!

We tivo'd 5 of the 6 episodes this past weekend too - we missed episode IV so my husband won't show our daughter the series until we go buy it so she can see them in order (VI-VI then I-III). He may be the bigger nerd when it comes to SW. I am going to bust out the light sabers and the vader masks for the event.
My husband is a science fiction writer. Our girls are destined for nerdiness. I'm fine with that. They are on the floor loudly "reading" their board books while I type.
